News for the week of April 2nd, 2012

Just a few notable items for you this week.

Blood Donor Bursary
Canadian Blood Services is inviting post-secondary students to become blood donor recruiters. To become eligible for bursaries, students are challenged to recruit a minimum of 20 blood donors (5 of whom are new donors) who are willing to donate between June 1 and September 3, 2012.
A $1,500 bursary in each site will be awarded to the student who has the most new donors, and a $1,000 bursary will be awarded to the student who has the most blood donations made overall.  Flyer and application will be sent as separate attachments.


 

Energy Expert to Speak at Sheridan – Trafalgar Campus
President’s Creative Challenge for Sustainability Applicants,
Mentors and Enthusiasts 

As a part of our Integrated Energy Master Planning at Sheridan College,
Peter Garforth, a leading expert in Energy planning has agreed to speak
to Sheridan Faculty, students and  staff to help further engage the
institution in planning initiatives. Peter’s presentation will provide
an important high level (non-technical) understanding of ‘why’
institutions are increasingly taking hold of their energy futures, what
an Integrated Energy Master Plan for Sheridan will accomplish , and
most importantly, why academic institutions developing curriculum,
tools, designs and research around Energy planning will provide valuable
differentiation in the future.
Following Peter’s presentation, students will participate in an
important data gathering workshop and will become eligible to become
members of  Sheridan’s Energy Taskforce and future workshops.

Youth Volunteer Team Leader – Weekends

Halton Healthcare is seeking a volunteer to assist us with the coordination and supervision of our high school student volunteer program.  You will liaise among front line volunteers, nursing unit staff, and Volunteer Services staff.  Communicating service changes, concerns and suggestions, with all parties, is a key part of the role. 

You will periodically meet the students and staff during the Saturday and Sunday afternoon shifts (4 – 6 pm).  Some weekend morning shift coverage may be requested on occasion.

Are you interested in promoting respect and acceptance within the Sheridan community?

Sheridan is launching b-right: a campaign focused on encouraging respect, equality, growth and diversity among all members of the Sheridan community.  The goal of b-right is to introduce programs and initiatives which raise awareness on how we should treat one another, regardless of whether we are students, faculty or community members at large.  Peers interested in helping to launch this campaign are needed during the following times:  Davis Campus: March 21st from 11am to 2pm in the B wing
HMC: March 22nd from 11 am to 2pm by the Student Lounge and the Security Desk
5 Peers per station are needed.  Peers who participate will receive a free t-shirt.

Blood Donor Clinic – Trafalgar
The next blood donor clinic will be held on Thursday, March 22nd

Here are some comments made after the last blood donor clinic at Sheridan:
Blood Donor Clinic Results:
49/46 units were collected = 107% of collections to target!
This means that 147 patients in the community will be supported in their way to recovery and restored health.  
77 people attended the clinic, and we truly thank them for wishing to support Canadian Blood Services, and specifically Canadian patients waiting to receive these life saving blood products!  
You have made a tremendous difference!!!!!  
The next blood donor clinic at Sheridan College Oakville Campus is scheduled for THURSDAY MARCH 22nd.

New Waste/Recycling Bins – Sheridan Four-campus Research Presentation Members of the Task Force have been busy investigating options for a new comprehensive bins program, communication strategy and organics program for all campuses to align with Sheridan’s waste/recycling streams.

IMPACT! Sustainability Champions Training

The Co-operators and The Natural Step Canada have teamed up to offer you the IMPACT! Sustainability Champions Training!
This series of two-day trainings starts with a pilot in Toronto on March 22-23rd and focuses in two areas;  
realizing your leadership potential and 
developing your sustainability project using the 
The Natural Step Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development.

You’ll be connecting with passionate emerging sustainability leaders from your region, including alumni of the 2009 and 2011  IMPACT! Youth Conferences for Sustainability Leadership
As a training participant, you will be offered ongoing coaching and mentoring from local subject experts, and the opportunity to apply for a grant from the IMPACT! Fund to help you and your project soar. 

Bring your own project or create one during the training!

Spirit Painting Session

The Spirit Painting is a piece of art that is self reflective.  The process of creating a Spirit Painting allows us to relate oneself to nature.  It also allows our self to discover what we are connected to or what we want to become more connected to.  It is a journey of self discovery and can bring balance to us spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically.
All materials are provided at this free session.  Space is limited.

Volleyball/Sick Kids Fundraiser
One of our student athletes and fellow Peer Mentors, Frank Pento (Team Captain, Men’s
Volleyball) lost his mother to cancer in November. In lieu of flowers
the family asked donations be made to her favorite charity, Sick Kids
Hospital. The Athletic Department has decided to honour “Franca Pento” by hosting
a fund raiser where all proceeds will be given to the Hospital for Sick
Kids. This event will take place Wednesday, February 15th at the Trafalgar Gym
during a double header Volleyball Game; Women’s @ 6 pm and Men’s @ 8
pm.  Both Sheridan Bruin Teams will be playing Redeemer.
Tickets will be sold at the games for a variety of gift baskets and
Admittance is $2.00.  ALL proceeds from tickets sales and promotional
draws will go directly to Sick Kids.
We ask your support with attendance and/or donations. Donations are

AODA Training – Reminder
Every Sheridan employee is required to take the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) Customer Service Training E-learning module through SLATE, Sheridan’s Learning Management System. 

Locating the Training:
To take this training, please follow this link:  https://vista.sheridaninstitute.ca  To begin the training you need to log in using your current Sheridan Staff User Name and existing password.

Completing the Training:
Step 1:  Once you have entered SLATE, click on the PD4010 – AODA course in your course list.*  You will then see 3 options; one each for Support Staff, Faculty and Administrators.  At a minimum you are required to complete the one Module for your primary role at Sheridan. 
Step 2:  At the end of your Module you are required to take an assessment in order for the College records to indicate that you have successfully completed this training by receiving a score of 7/10 or higher. If you are unsuccessful, you must re-take the assessment until you achieve that score.

Rebound Choices Program – Volunteer Opportunities
If you have a youth-friendly attitude and genuinely enjoy being around young people this is where you should be!
What you need to know…
What:    Rebound is a mentoring program for youth, delivered by community volunteers. Volunteers provide leadership, mentoring, and positive role modeling while guiding youth through life skill workshops.

Think Pink Returns
Now in it’s 5th year, Think Pink fundraising and awareness activities return to Sheridan the week of January 23rd – 27th.  Activities will be taking place at Trafalgar, Davis and HMC.  All proceeds raised will be directed to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
